Tottenham defender names three Barcelona legends as childhood role models

Over the last couple of seasons, one of the centre-backs that have made a name for themselves through a unique style is Cristian Romero. Coming through Juventus, the Argentina got mainstream attention at Atalanta and was later acquired by Tottenham Hotspur for more than €43 million.

Romero also plied his trade for Argentina during the 2021 Copa America, and was one of the best defenders as La Albiceleste lifted the trophy.

Speaking to AS Argentina, Romero opened up about his childhood idols, and had a certain Carles Puyol in the shortlist.

“I grew up watching Barcelona because of Messi and at that time, Puyol and Pique played as centre-backs. Also Mascherano.”

Cuti was also inquired about Lionel Messi, and how the experience to play alongside and under his captaincy, to which he replied:

“As a player, beyond the fact that many people say that he is missing the World Cup trophy, he is the greatest I have ever seen. He does not need anything else. If he retires today, he is the greatest in history, I have not seen anyone better.”

“Messi is a great person, who teaches you and with the humility he makes his image more amazing. Messi is the greatest in history and he does not need anything else to say, ‘I’m the best,’” Romero added in praise of the GOAT.

Argentina are heading into the tournament as one of the two favourites alongside Brazil, but will need both Messi and Romero at their level best to take them over the edge.
