Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif has reached the Monterrey Open quarter-finals after earning a hard-fought victory.
Sherif picked up momentum last week after defeating Columbia’s Maria Osorio Serrano (7-6, 4-2) in the tournament’s round of 32.
The 26-year-old continued her winning run in the round of 16 on Thursday after triumphing 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 over China’s Xinyu Wang.
Wang was close to claiming the victory but Sheirf’s heroics saved two match points to secure qualification for the quarter-finals.
She is now set to face world no.5 Caroline Garcia, who managed back-to-back wins over Kaja Juvan of Slovenia and Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz.
