Huge flare-up between Shrewsbury and Barnsley players with fans involved and punished expected

Huge flare-up between Shrewsbury and Barnsley players with fans involved right at the the League One clash and punished expected.

There was some heated scenes in the sixth minute of stoppage time after a foul on Barnsley goalkeeper Brad Collins, with the final whistle blown seconds later.

The Football Association could potentially hand out a fine for failing to control players, something that has done for melees at other matches this season.

The game itself saw Barnsley made it three successive wins in all competitions with a battling 1-0 victory at Shrewsbury.

Adam Phillips netted his first league goal for the Reds in the 10th minute, finding the bottom right corner from 12 yards after good build-up from Herbie Kane and Devante Cole.

Shrews striker Ryan Bowman was inches away from turning in a Taylor Moore shot which whistled just wide, before Slobodan Tedic fired off target from five yards at the other end after a Cole header was saved.

The Shrews badly struggled to break the visitors down and were restricted to a series of wayward long-range shots as Barnsley showed why they have the best defensive record in Sky Bet League One.

Cole chipped an effort over the bar from the left of the box on 85 minutes after good work by Phillips. At the other end, Luke Leahy shot well over from 15 yards out after a scramble in the box.

Shrewsbury boss Steve Cotterill spoke to the media following the game against Barnsley.

“We lost the game in the first half. We were not sharp enough today. That is understandable considering the week we have had compared to their week.

“They had a complete week without a game and we have not had hardly any time from the Wednesday night game to turn this one around.

“We lost the game on sharpness. We did not do enough to win it, but we definitely didn’t deserve to get beat. We definitely didn’t deserve to get beat.

“We just weren’t sharp enough. We lost the game on sharpness – nothing else. I bet today we out ran them. I bet today we have had more possession than them.

“They have only had a couple of efforts on target but we have only had one. That is the difference, we lost the game on sharpness. We weren’t sharp.

“We have been the victim of Oxford having to change a game to put our game back.

“Then we don’t get any time to prepare against a team that has just come down from the Championship and has a squad and probably a budget twice the size of ours.

“We had to take them on and I think we did that. We did that as manfully as we could today.

Barnsley Head Coach Michael Duff reacted to his side’s 1-0 victory over the Shrews for iFollow Barnsley in Shropshire.

“I’m really pleased,” began the gaffer. “It’s a really hard place to come. I came here on Wednesday and they totally dominated the game against Oxford who I think are a really good team.

“It’s another clean sheet, it’s another three points. We know how hard it is to win a game of football so we’re always delighted with the win.

“I think it was a good goal, I’ll have to watch it back,” he attempted to recall, smiling. “It wasn’t just a good finish, it was good build-up.

“Things that we’ve worked on, runners into certain parts of the pitch. We’ve now tweaked the shape a little bit, and getting midfielders in the box. It was a clinical finish.

“I think that’s something we do well,” he discussed. “I don’t think Brad has had a save to make of any note. We’ve said that quite a lot, even when we have been beaten in games. The whole team works hard.

“Cohesion amongst the team, spirit. People coming on the pitch that haven’t been in the squad recently. I trust them all. We’ll always pick a team that’s in the game that we think at that moment in time will affect the game in the right way.
