Much has been made about the futures of some of Barcelona’s first-team stars including Ansu Fati, Franck Kessie and Sergio Busquets, among others.
But there are also youth team prospects that have shown immense potential but are on the verge of leaving Camp Nou at the end of the season. One of these prospects is Ilias Akhomach.
The young forward, who once had a short sequence of first-team action, under the leadership of Ronald Koeman, is considered one of the most talented players in the Barça Athletic squad right now. He has featured prominently in the subsidiary squad this term, racking up 20 league appearances.
But with his contract expiring at the end of the season, Akhomach is expected to leave Barcelona, in search of more first-team opportunities. According to El Chiringuito, the winger may have already found a new destination in the form of Leeds United.
The report states that Akhomach has agreed a four-year deal with the Premier League outfit. He will join the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.
This could serve as a major blow for Barcelona, who have had to part ways with several La Masia prospects over the past few years. This also comes in the midst of reports that revealed the uncertainty around the future of the club’s grassroots director Jose Ramon Alexanco.
The failure to tie down Akhomach, in fact, was one of the main reasons why the Barcelona hierarchy is reportedly unhappy with Alexanco. They are also upset by the fact that Akhmach’s Barça Athletic teammate Victor Barbera may also leave the club at the end of the season.
The acquisition of Akhomach could be an excellent piece of business from Leeds United’s perspective, though, as the Whites look to strengthen their attacking unit after yet another relegation dogfight this season.
