A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered an interesting update on the future of Charlie O’Connell.
The Peterborough United youngster is regarded as one of the most talented players to come out of the club’s youth academy. However, it appears he could leave the club on a free transfer in 2023, as confirmed by head coach Grant McCann.
The Peterborough manager has gone on to confirm that O’Connell may have received offers from Barcelona, which has kept him from renewing his contract at the club.
O’Connell’s current contract at Peterborough United expires at the end of the season. The club have approached him for a new deal, but the player has no intention to renew anytime soon and will leave the club as a free agent in the summer.
“We offered him a new four-and-a-half-year deal almost immediately after the Plymouth game, but unfortunately Charlie isn’t signing.
“Obviously, his agent has told him that Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are behind him. This is really frustrating for us since we see a real path for Charlie,” McCann confirmed as quoted by the aforementioned report.
A centre-back by trade, O’Connell has featured in four competitive matches for Peterborough at the age of 19. However, McCann confirmed that he will not be featuring for the club unless he extends his contract.
This paves the way for Barcelona to make a move for O’Connell, who will be eligible to reach a pre-contract agreement with the player in January. However, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also involved in the chase, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the defender.
